stop the stigma!
I think it’s time we take the stigma away from anxiety and depression!
According to the Centers for Disease Control more than 1 in 5 adults and youth (age 13 to 18) in the United States live with some kind of mental illness. 1 out of every 25 US adults lives with a serious mental illness. (www.cdc.gov/mentalhealth/learn/index.htm)
If it is so prevalent, why the stigma?
Is it the phrase “mental illness”?
Sometimes that’s what does it for me. I don’t want people to think something is wrong with me!
So let’s start today with forgetting about the stigma of anxiety and depression, and focus instead on community – walking together through our struggles, encouraging each other along the way.
Let’s begin the conversation with what types of things bring anxiety into our lives. Some things for me are:
- Fear of failure/unacceptance
- Making mistakes
- Borrowing trouble from tomorrow
- Hanging onto things of yesterday I cannot change
